Tops
- Trio Tipo (Steve Haskin, Clint Hoover, Eric Graham)
This
CD is guitarist Steve Haskin's outing into a selection of jazz standards,
and displays Steve's penchant for subtlety, and nuanced musical intimacy.
The recording has a definite "chamber jazz" feel to it, emphasized by
Steve playing a nylon string classical guitar instead of a steel string
acoustic or electric guitar. Tops has a spacious, reflective atmosphere,
best exemplified by the group's unique rendition of "On a Clear Day" which
captures a contemplative mood that is at once both meditative and nostalgic.
There are some surprises here as well, such as the ending of "My Favorite
Things" which morphs into a kind of joyous irish folk romp! Eric Graham
plays some tasty upright "stick" bass and Clint Hoover displays his usual
top notch chromatic harp jazz chops. After listening to this record, you
will think Trio Tipo is Tops too.
